Chase With an ITIN

Last updated 31 July 2026
A lit building at dusk, palms and parked cars

Chase is the one major issuer that answers this in writing. Their own education library says an application asks for a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

And with either, in their words, you should be able to apply for most credit cards. Read on their pages on 31 July 2026.

They are equally clear about the limit of that. Credit history, income and other factors decide the approval, which no issuer publishes in advance.

In the client record First Class Citizen publish, a Chase Ink Business Preferred was approved at a 5,000 dollar limit on a fresh ITIN. A reconsideration call in the same record was refused.

In their own words

What Chase actually publishes about an ITIN

Most pages answering this question have no source at all. Chase has one, and it is Chase.

Under a heading about getting a card with an SSN or an ITIN, their education library states that if you already have either number you should be able to apply for most credit cards, and that you simply include your number with the application.

Their checklist of what an application asks for opens with the same pairing. Full legal name, then a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, then address, income and employment.

Read that as a non-resident and it settles a question most sites answer with a guess. The ITIN is not a workaround at Chase. It sits on the form where the SSN would.

All of it read on their own pages on 31 July 2026. Published wording moves, so the date matters as much as the quote.

The form is published. What your own file opens is the conversation.

The limit of it

What they do not publish, and say so

One sentence later they draw the line themselves. Credit history, income and other factors are used to evaluate the application for approval.

So the published part is the form, not the outcome. Nobody, at any issuer, publishes who gets approved.

That distinction is worth carrying into every other page you read on this subject. A checklist is a fact. A card list promising approval is somebody's experience wearing a rule's clothing.

The same line runs through the bank question in full and through the cards that opened.

The record

What has actually opened at Chase

The strongest single entry in the published record is a Chase approval email. An Ink Business Preferred, a 5,000 dollar limit, opened on a fresh ITIN.

Another client's Chase appointment closed with the account, the debit card and the credit card all approved, and a second appointment already booked.

A personal card in the same record came in at 2,500 dollars, which the client called a start rather than a finish. Elsewhere a Chase line sits at 2,700.

One written testimonial describes six personal and business accounts opened across Chase, Bank of America and Citi.

The other half

The refusal they published anyway

The same record carries a Chase reconsideration call that was denied the first time. It is published by the company whose clients these are.

That is worth more than another approval screenshot. A business showing you the call that went nowhere is telling you what the average looks like.

It also matches what Chase publishes. Approval turns on the file, so two applications on the same number can land differently.

What to do after a refusal is its own subject, and the reconsideration lever is in the limit-increase guide.

Which bank first, with which product: that is what the call maps.

The business side

Business cards, an EIN and an ITIN

Chase publishes the business version of the same answer. You may be able to get a business credit card without an SSN by providing an EIN or an ITIN.

That matters for anyone running a US LLC from abroad, because the company already has an EIN before the owner has anything personal.

The record agrees on where it can lead. The Ink Business Preferred above is a business card, and it opened at 5,000 dollars.

The business-card side of the file covers how it sits beside the personal one.

Neither number

If you have no SSN and no ITIN yet

Chase names one exception, and it is narrow. Some issuers provide cards exclusively for students that will only require a passport to submit an application.

For everyone else their sentence is that most applications require one of the two numbers. Which puts the taxpayer number first in the order, not last.

The full answer without either number walks that road, and the document checklist starts the application itself.

FAQ

Does Chase accept an ITIN for a credit card?
Chase publishes that an application asks for a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and that with either you should be able to apply for most credit cards, read on their own education pages on 31 July 2026. What they do not publish, and say so in the next sentence, is who gets approved: credit history, income and other factors decide that.
Can I get a Chase credit card without an SSN or an ITIN?
Chase writes that most credit card applications require one of the two numbers. The only exception they name is that some issuers provide cards exclusively for students requiring just a passport to apply.
Has anyone actually been approved at Chase on an ITIN?
The published client record includes a Chase approval email for an Ink Business Preferred at a 5,000 dollar limit opened on a fresh ITIN, a personal card at 2,500 dollars, and an appointment where the account, debit card and credit card were all approved. The same record also carries a reconsideration call that was refused.
Can I get a Chase business card with an EIN?
Chase publishes that you may be able to get a business credit card without an SSN by providing an EIN, an ITIN, or by working with a specialised business provider. For a US LLC run from abroad the company has an EIN before the owner has anything personal.
What decides the outcome if the number is not the problem?
The file. A US credit file is built from what American lenders report, so a first application from a thin file is a different question from a second one after months of reported activity. That clock is the subject of the full credit guide.
