US Credit From Scratch

Last updated 22 July 2026
The stone facade of a United States national bank

A non-US resident can build a real US credit score from zero. It starts with a credit file, opened on an ITIN with a first card.

The hard part is that first account. US banks are cautious with a brand-new ITIN file, and no score exists until three to six months of activity have been reported.

First Class Citizen's method is built around exactly that. The first card is opened in person, on a Miami visit they organize, and their clients reach a 720 score in about four to six months.

The engagement is advisory. They give you the method and open the door at the banks. You hold every account.

The mechanics

How a US credit file actually starts

Credit is a record of use, not a birthright. A file exists once a lender reports an account to the three nationwide bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

No Social Security Number is required. That file can be compiled on your ITIN together with your name, your current and prior US addresses, and your date of birth. What it needs is an account that reports from day one.

There are two standard starters. A secured card, where your own cash deposit sets the limit. Or a credit-builder loan, where the bank holds the amount as savings while your on-time payments are reported.

Either way a waiting period is built into the system. You typically need three to six months of reported activity before a score can be calculated, and that clock is set by the bureaus rather than by any provider.

None of it starts before the number does, which is why getting the ITIN in hand is the step that comes first.

The mechanics are public. The order they happen in, for your situation, is what the call settles.

The method

How First Class Citizen builds it

The bottleneck for a non-resident is that very first account, and the method is built around clearing it in person.

The first card is opened during a Miami visit they organize, one to two days on the ground, with the banks they work with for ITIN applicants: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Capital One, and Citibank. The card is usually in hand within three to seven business days.

From there it is a reporting game. On their method, clients reach a 720 score in about four to six months.

One line on the model, because it matters. They advise and open the door, they do not touch your accounts.

Every card and login stays yours. What you get is the sequence, the introductions, and the room in Miami where the first approval happens.

The point

Why the score is the real asset

A US credit score is leverage priced in interest. It is the line between paying cash and borrowing at the bank's cost, between a declined application and a business card with a real limit.

For a founder operating through a US LLC, it is what turns the entity from a shell into something a bank will actually extend credit to.

It is also the on-ramp to the part clients talk about most, the cards and the travel points. That is downstream. The score comes first, and the first card is where it starts.

FAQ

Can a non-US resident really build a US credit score?
Yes. A credit file can be compiled on an ITIN using your name, US addresses, and date of birth, once you hold an account that reports to the three nationwide bureaus. The score follows the reported history.
Which banks work with an ITIN applicant?
The banks First Class Citizen works with for ITIN applicants include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Capital One, and Citibank. The first card is opened in person during a Miami visit they organize.
How long until I have a card, and a usable score?
The first card is opened during a one to two day Miami visit and is usually in hand within three to seven business days. On First Class Citizen's method, clients reach a 720 score in about four to six months.
Do they build the credit for me?
No, and that is deliberate. They advise, organize the Miami visit, and hand you the exact method; you open and hold every account yourself. They do not access client bank accounts.
Do I need an ITIN first?
Yes. The credit file is built on the ITIN, so the ITIN comes first. The complete ITIN guide covers that step end to end.
What is the first product for a brand-new file?
Usually a secured card, which runs on your own deposit, or a credit-builder loan. Both report to the three bureaus from the start, which is what a new file needs. Which one fits your situation is what the assessment call sorts out.
