Your ITIN Arrived. What Happens Next

An official letter and documents on a desk

Most of what is written about the ITIN stops at the moment it arrives. That is the wrong place to stop, because nothing has happened yet.

The number is a key. On its own it opens nothing, and it does not start anything running in the background while you wait.

In particular it does not create a credit file. That is the single most common misunderstanding in the weeks after the letter lands.

This page covers what the number is, what the IRS says it explicitly does not do, and where the next move actually sits.

The document

Keep the letter, not just the number

The IRS mails a CP565 notice with the assigned ITIN. That notice is the document, and the number written on it is not a substitute for it.

The IRS's own instruction is to contact them if you cannot find the CP565 they mailed with your assigned ITIN, which tells you how it is treated.

Institutions asking you to evidence the number generally want the notice rather than a number typed into a form. Losing it is a slow problem to fix, and it is fully avoidable in the first week.

Nothing runs in the background while you wait. That is the part worth knowing in week one.

The limits

What the IRS says the number does not do

The IRS lists this plainly, and it is worth reading before anyone tells you otherwise.

An ITIN does not qualify you for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit, and it does not authorise you to work legally in the United States.

None of that is a limitation on what it is for. It is a tax processing number, and the things it is not are the things people are most often sold.

What it genuinely opens is covered on the ITIN guide, and the boundary between it and an SSN on ITIN, EIN and SSN compared.

The misunderstanding

The number does not start a credit file

This is the one that costs people months, because it is invisible. Nothing happens, and nothing was ever going to.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes where a credit file comes from, and it is not an identifier. A file exists once accounts are reported to the bureaus.

So an identifier alone leaves you exactly where you were, in the state the CFPB calls credit invisible: no credit history for a bureau to report on.

Which means the clock people believe started when the letter arrived has not started. It starts when something is opened and reported.

How US credit is built from zero covers what reporting actually requires, and the score explained covers what the file becomes once it exists.

The order

Where the next move sits

The sequence people expect is number, then card. The sequence that works is number, then an account, then something that reports.

The banking question comes first because it is the one with published answers: which banks work with an ITIN and opening the account itself.

If a company sits in the picture, the filing a foreign-owned LLC still owes is worth knowing before the year turns rather than after.

The card question follows the file rather than leading it, which is the whole reason the order matters.

The number is the key. What it opens depends entirely on what you do next.

The boundaries

What this page does not tell you, and why

It does not give you a submission procedure for the credit bureaus. There is a step there that is genuinely operational, and it is not something to reconstruct from general sources and present as a method.

It does not say when your first card arrives. Approval sits with an issuer, nobody outside one can promise it, and any page that gives you a date is guessing.

It does not cover renewal or expiry rules. Those exist, they change, and they are not asserted here from memory.

What it does is stop the most expensive mistake of the first month, which is waiting for something that was never going to happen on its own.

FAQ

Does an ITIN give me a credit score?
No. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes a credit file as something that exists once accounts are reported to the bureaus, so an identifier on its own leaves you credit invisible. The file begins when something is opened and reported, not when the number is issued.
What document proves my ITIN?
The IRS mails a CP565 notice with the assigned ITIN, and its own guidance is to contact the IRS if you cannot find the CP565 that was mailed with your number. Keep the notice rather than only the digits.
Can I work in the US with an ITIN?
No. The IRS states directly that an ITIN does not authorise you to work legally in the United States, and that it does not qualify you for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit.
What should happen first, a bank account or a credit card?
The banking question has published answers and the card question follows the credit file rather than leading it. Something has to be opened and reported before a file exists for an issuer to look at.
How long until my first credit card?
This page does not give a date, deliberately. Approval sits with an issuer, nobody outside one can promise it, and a page that supplies a timeline is guessing on your behalf.
