ITIN Renewal

Last updated 26 July 2026

Plan on a three year validity: that is how First Class Citizen frames it, and renewal is its own step at the same published price. The precise IRS mechanics behind that planning number: an ITIN not included on at least one federal tax return for 3 consecutive tax years expires on December 31 of the third year, and every use on a return keeps it alive. Renewal is Form W-7 again with the renewal reason checked. Done for you, it is the same two minute form as the original.
The rule

What expires an ITIN, exactly

The IRS rule is about use, not age. In the instructions' own words: if your ITIN was not included on at least one US federal tax return for the last 3 consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 of the third consecutive tax year, and must be renewed before being used again on a return.

File with it and the clock restarts; leave it unused and three years is when the music stops. Which is why the practical planning framing on the service page reads: valid for 3 years.

One legacy cohort is stricter: ITINs assigned before 2013 that were never renewed are expired regardless, and renew with the next return.

Not sure which step applies to you yet? That is what the call is for.

The process

How the renewal actually runs

A renewal is Form W-7 with the renewal reason checked at the top, submitted together with the tax return the ITIN will appear on, unless a W-7 exception applies.

The processing clock is the same one new applications face: the IRS asks you to allow 7 weeks, stretching to 9 to 11 in tax season or from overseas.

The full timeline picture lives in the how-long guide, and if an application ever bounces, the rejected guide covers the redo.

Done for you, the renewal looks like the original did: a two minute form, a passport scan, with the original staying with you.

The economics are one line: 1,000 dollars, valid for 3 years, same renewal price, zero maintenance cost in between. No subscription creep, no surprise fees. Details and booking are on the ITIN service page.

FAQ

What actually makes an ITIN expire?
Non-use. Per the IRS: if your ITIN was not included on at least one US federal tax return for the last 3 consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 of the third consecutive tax year. Each use on a return keeps it alive.
My ITIN is from before 2013 and was never renewed. Is it still good?
No. The IRS states that ITINs assigned before 2013 and never renewed need a renewal application submitted with your federal tax return.
Do I need to renew if the ITIN is only used on bank and information forms?
Per the IRS, if your ITIN is only being used on information returns for reporting purposes, you do not need to renew at this time. The renewal becomes necessary when you next need to file a US federal tax return with it.
How does the renewal application work?
It is Form W-7 again with the renewal reason checked, submitted with the tax return the ITIN will appear on, unless a W-7 exception applies. Processing runs on the same IRS clock as new applications: allow 7 weeks, 9 to 11 in tax season or from overseas.
Can my spouse or dependents renew too?
The IRS rule: spouses and dependents renew only when claimed for an allowable tax benefit or when filing their own return. Otherwise their renewal waits until one of those applies.
What does a done-for-you renewal cost?
First Class Citizen's ITIN is 1,000 dollars, valid for 3 years, same renewal price, and zero maintenance cost in between. Same two minute form, same process.
